This game is best played in Chrome. All sprites (excluding the city level background and the garden level background) were custom made with animation (using Piskel).

SPARK is a game about putting out fires. Equipped with a fire extinguisher and water bucket, you must control the flames and emerge unscathed. A variety of enemies that emerge from these fires will try to stop you, demanding coordination and awareness of your surroundings to succeed. Staying still is a sure way to go up in flames.

We first came to the idea of a world being engulfed by fire from global warming. However, as development continued, the game had taken more inspiration from more fictional themes. Gameplay was inspired by fast-paced shooters like Doom and Enter the Dungeon.

Being our first time developing in PixelPAD, there were many challenges to overcome. Working on the same project at the same time was difficult, as we could not easily share code while developing. Optimization and compatibility were also problems from the start, but as we became more familiar with PixelPAD we learned about the game maker’s strengths and shortcomings. Despite these challenges, there are still some aspects of the game we are proud of.

One accomplishment is the enemy AI. Some enemies will aggressively pursue you, then shoot from a distance to test your reflexes. Getting the enemies to follow you around took some learning and optimization, but the results are enemies that (hopefully) are fun to play against! Sprite design is also a major aspect that turned out to be better than we had imagined. Sprites look fluid and, for the most part, are complemented by sound design.

Having only two weeks to develop a game was a challenge! If there was a greater window of time to work on it, most of that time would be spent optimizing and adding a greater variety of enemies, as those are two areas where our game is lacking.

As the game of our first game jam, we are proud to present SPARK.
